Monday, May 23: Mobile Library Closed for Repairs

The Racine Public Library's Mobile Library is experiencing technical problems and will not be in service on Monday, May 23. Depending on the nature of the problem and the length of time it takes to make repairs, the Mobile Library may be out of service additional days. Patrons who normally use the Mobile Library are advised to call the Adult Services Department, 262-636-9217, for an update before planning a visit to the Mobile Library.

Materials due at the Mobile Library while it is out of service will be renewed, and fines will not be charged.

Thursday, February 3: Library Closed Due to Snow

The Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St, and the Mobile Library will remain closed due to snow on Thursday, February 3rd, 2011. No materials will be due on Thursday, February 3, 2011. Main library materials due on that date will be extended to Friday, February 4; Mobile Library materials will be due Thursday, February 10, 2011.

Classes and storytimes scheduled for Thursday have been canceled.

Mobile Library Closed for Holidays

The Racine Public Library's Mobile Library will not be in service December 19, 2010 through January 2, 2011. Materials due during this time period will be automatically renewed and fines will not be charged. Any materials on hold that become available during that time may be picked up at the Main Library, 75 Seventh St. The Mobile Library will resume its normal schedule on Monday, January 3, 2011.

Thursday, November 11: Library to Close Due to Renovation

The Racine Public Library, 75 7th Street, will be closed to the public on Thursday, November 11, 2010 and will reopen on Friday, November 12, 2010 due to renovation. The Mobile Library will remain open on November 11 and materials due on that date will be extended to November 12. To access the library's adult materials, patrons will be asked to place a hold on items via the Mobile Library (262.939.2264), the library's website (racinelibrary.info), or through telephone reference services (262.636.9217). Some items placed on hold may not be accessible during renovations. Materials in the Youth Services Department will still be available for public use.

Access to Library Materials Limited

The Director of the Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St, is recommending that patrons call or visit the library's website for materials they wish to check out before attending the library. Staff access to the second floor is limited and the availability of materials has been sharply curtailed due to construction.

Patrons may place holds using the library's materials catalog at www.racinelibrary.info or may call 262-636-9217 to reserve items for pickup. Every effort will be made to retrieve items reserved.

Wednesday, September 1: Library Closed Due to Reconstruction

On Wednesday, September 1, 2010, the library will close to the public in order to allow the staff to reorganize the services and resources which will be available beginning Thursday, September 2, 2010. Materials originally due September 1 will be due September 2.

The second floor will be unavailable to the public for about six weeks, starting Thursday, September 2, 2010, while the area is treated for asbestos and then recarpeted.

Space for studying and Internet access will be severely limited. Eight computers will be available to adults, for one hour per day. A few tables will be available in the children's department, but children have priority after 2pm.

Materials placed on hold may not be accessible, depending on the location of the items at the time of the request, since the collections will be moving around during this time.

Balestreiri Group will be conducting the abatement of asbestos beneath the carpet.

Absolute Construction Enterprises will be overseeing removal of the old carpet and installation of the new carpet squares.

Hallett Movers, specializing in library moves, will be performing the moving of shelves and materials.

Embury, Ltd. will be installing the new shelves necessary.

Adult patrons are encouraged to check out any adult materials they might need before August 31, 2010.

Children's materials will be available.

Racine Public Library Closed on Wed. June 30

At the request of the United States Secret Service, the Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St., has been asked to close on Wednesday, June 30 to accommodate President Obama's scheduled visit to Memorial Hall. The mobile library and the main library will be closed to the public. The book drops in front of the library will be removed on Tuesday night and put back on Thursday morning. Those wishing to return books during that time are asked to visit other book drop locations. Click here for the book drop locations. Books due to the main library on Wednesday, June 30 will be renewed until Thursday, July 1. Mobile Library material will be renewed until Wednesday, July 7.

What's New @ the Racine Public Library

The Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St., is holding a staff institute day on Friday, January 25, 2008 to begin the planning process for the library's next strategic plan. In order to allow all staff to participate, the main and mobile libraries will be closed to the public. No materials will be due on that day; library materials checked out at the main library will be due January 26, and materials checked out on the Mobile Library will be due the following week on February 1. During February and March the staff will begin drafting a new plan of public service. Public comments and suggestions are encouraged. In December 2007 the library purchased three new state-of-the-art digital viewer-scanners with the help of funds donated by the Althea Brach Estate and the Robert and Mary Beck Family Fund through the Racine Community Foundation. These ST200 digital microfilm readers
provide high resolution, edge-to-edge quality images and are able to read negative and positive film and fiche. Simple icons allow for editing; printing; storing files on CD, disk, or USB thumb drive; or emailing selected or cropped images. Newspaper articles that don't copy well on the older reader/printers have greater clarity on the ST200. Library staff is available to help patrons with use of the new microfilm readers.
