Battle of the Books Registration Underway

Get ready, get set... READ! It's Battle Time… time for local youth to form their teams for the 10th annual Battle of the Books competition at the Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St.

Battle of the Books is a literature contest for 4th and 5th grade students in Racine County where teams comprised of 4 students are asked to read and become knowledgeable about the content of 40 books selected by Racine Public Library librarians. Teams may be formed with students from the same or different schools. Teams with both 4th and 5th graders are accepted.

Meets are held in a public forum where team members are asked random questions about the books they read. Points are accumulated based on the number of correct answers. The team with the highest score among all participating teams is declared the champion.

A link to the 2009/2010 reading list, general information, and team registration form may be found at http://www.racinelibrary.info/YouthServicesBOB.htm. Registration for this year's Battle of the Books will only be accepted on-line. Registration closes December 21, 2009.

Questions about Battle of the Books may be directed to Anne Callaghan: anne.callaghan@racinelibrary.info, or Becky Spika: becky.spika@racinelibrary.info.

Book Buddy Program Pairs Teens & Toddlers

Teen leaders at the Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St., have organized a fun reading event for preschoolers, ages 3-5, every Friday from 1:30-2:30 pm in the Youth Services Dept. Beginning Friday, June 17, members of the TeenSpace Leadership group will become Book Buddies to interested kids and their parents. A Book Buddy shares his/her favorite story with a young listener for 15 minutes or more of one-on-one reading.

This program provides teens with a valuable community service opportunity and exposes them to multi-generational activities. As well, Book Buddies gives young listeners another wonderful opportunity to share books and develop critical early literacy skills.

Children who are routinely read to learn to read more easily and become better prepared academically for entrance into school. Reading to children encourages their development of skills in language, listening, vocabulary, self-expression and attention span.

15 minute time slots with teen volunteers are available on a first come/first served basis or may be reserved ahead of time by contacting the Youth Services Dept. at 262.636.9245. Parents are welcome to be present during the one-on-one readings and may bring a child's favorite books if desired.

Teens interested in volunteering for the Book Buddy program may contact Becky Spika at 262.619.2571 or email becky.spika@racinelibrary.info.

Library's Ruff Readers Program Begins Spring/Summer Season

The Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St.,, is once again hosting its popular Ruff Readers Read-to-the-dogs program this spring. The library has invited registered therapy dogs from Proper Paws University and the Racine Kennel Club to spend afternoons listening to kids read. Students in grades 1-5 may visit the Youth Services department on Mondays from 4-5:30 p.m., Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m., and Thursdays from 4:30-5:30 p.m.. to enjoy a 15-minute private session reading to these gentle, non-judgmental listeners. Although registration is not required, time slots are available on a first come/first serve basis unless a child calls ahead to reserve a spot. Slots may be reserved ahead of time by contacting the Library at 262.636.9245. Students who attend 3 or more reading sessions will have their picture taken with their favorite listening dog. These pictures will then be made into a keepsake "READ" postcard for the child to take with them and to have posted on a library display.

Studies have shown that children find reading to an animal less intimidating than reading to adults or peers. This unique event can transform a sometimes dreaded reading experience into a positive activity in which learning is facilitated. The Ruff Readers program is designed to encourage children to embrace the joy and fun of reading. Although our handlers and their dogs are wonderful listeners, they are not able to tutor children in reading skills. Children are encouraged to bring their favorite reading material or ask a librarian for a recommended selection.

For more information bout the Ruff Readers program, please contact the library at 636-9245.

Library Offers Winter Reading Challenges

The Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St., is hosting winter reading challenges for kids from Pre-kindergarten through 10th grade. The reading programs will run until February 23. Reading logs and instructions may be obtained by visiting the Youth Services Dept. at the Main library or the Mobile Library.

For kids in grades 3-10, the library is offering the Milwaukee Bucks Library Reading Program. Participants have until Feb. 23, 2009 to complete a 500 page reading goal. Readers score points for each page read from a book, magazine, or newspaper. All participants will receive a Milwaukee Buck's poster, stickers and bookmark when a reading record is turned in. 500 points scored earns each participant a voucher for a free ticket to select Milwaukee Bucks Basketball games. Students who read more than 750 pages will have their names entered into a drawing for an official Milwaukee Bucks autographed basketball. Six randomly selected children will participate in the Milwaukee Bucks starting lineup for each game date and 10 randomly selected children will be recognized at halftime for each game date. The free ticket voucher is only valid when the participant is accompanied by an adult.

For children in Pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade, the library offers "Read for the Fun of It." Children may read any book they choose or have a family member read to them. The titles of the books and the number of pages read are then recorded on the Reading Log. Once a child has read 500 or more pages, the Log is turned in to a librarian and the child will receive a small gift.

Children of all ages are also invited to read to earn a free ticket voucher to Disney On Ice 100 Years of Magic. Reading forms will be available at the Youth Services Reference Desk until January 31, 2009. Vouchers are available while supplies last.

For more information, contact the Racine Public Library at 262-636-9245.
