Join the Racine Public Library for a week of special events and programs in celebration of the American Library Association's National Library Week, April 11-16, 2011.
In appreciation for the community's support of its public library services, the Racine Public Library will extend amnesty to anyone with overdue items during National Library Week. Materials returned by Saturday, April 16 will accrue no fines.
To celebrate the public library as a source of open discussion, entertainment and education, the library will host several exciting events during the week:
Friends of the Library Members-Only Booksale - Saturday, April 9 from 11am-4pm
Members of the Friends of the Library are invited to peruse a growing selection of gently used and new books being offered in this private sale. The general public is invited to the library's ongoing book sale in the lobby. Membership fees for the Racine Public Library's Friends of the Library is $10 for an individual and $15 for a family. The Friends of the Library have provided the library with many valuable programs, services and specialty materials over the years. They also serve as advocates for state and county funding, and for promotion of library events. For more information on how to become a member contact the library at 262.636.9170.
Walk-a-Book Event: "Is There a Monster In My Bathtub?" - April 12-15
The library, in partnership with the Racine Community Foundation and the Runzheimer Foundation, will host a 2011 Walk-a-Book Exhibit entitled "Is There a Monster In My Bathtub?". The exhibit will be open for viewing Tuesday-Thursday from 9am-8pm and Friday from 11a-4pm.
The Walk-a-Book is a unique exhibit in which area artists have created illustrative artwork to accompany a children's adventure story written by local artist/author Jeff Levonian. Visitors to the exhibit walk the story while viewing each artists original illustrative piece.
Color photographs of each artist's illustrative work have been compiled along with the story text to create a unique collaborative collector's book. Copies of the book will also be available for sale at the Racine Public Library after April 15. Proceeds benefit the Racine County Food Bank and the Racine Public Library.
The event will conclude with a reception and art auction on Friday, April 15 from 5:30-8:00 pm at the Racine Public Library. The event is open to the public.
The Walk-a-Book project is being funded by the Racine Community Foundation and the Runzheimer Foundation. Artists participating in the exhibit are Robert W. Take Back The Night - Thursday, April 14, 5-7pm
You might not know this about victims of sexual assault; they might not ever tell you: 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men will be a victim of sexual assault at some point in their lives. Whether or not we are aware of it, we interact with survivors of sexual assault every day. Sexual Assault Services (SAS), in partnership with Olympia Brown Unitarian Universalist Church and the Racine Public Library, invite you to take a stand against sexual violence and support those who have been sexually assaulted.
SAS will be hosting Racine County's 8th Annual Take Back the Night begin at 5 p.m. at the Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St, with presentations by guest speakers, the Survivor Speak Out, and the display of the Stars of Courage project. From there, the event will move by awareness march to Olympia Brown Unitarian Universalist Church, 625 College Ave., for refreshments and the Clothesline Project exhibit.
The event is free and open to all community members. The Stars of Courage Project represents every survivor supported by Sexual Assault Services during the past 12 years and the Clothesline Project is a collection of T-shirts created by survivors and support people giving them a silent voice.

Classical Guitarist Peter Fletcher Concert - April 16, 2-3pm
The library celebrates the return of award-winning New York classical guitarist and recording artist Peter Fletcher with a free performance open to the public. Seating is available on a first come/first served basis.
This concert will feature selections from Fletcher's 2008 CD release on Tower Hill Records: Music of the Baroque. Other repertoire will include Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring from Cantata No. 147 as well as the Chaconne in D minor by J. S. Bach; Usher-Waltz, an unusual and intense piece by Russian guitarist and composer Nikita Koshkin; two works from Maurice Ravel's exquisite Mother Goose Suite, and music of Weiss, Albeniz, Villa-Lobos Ponce, Reusner, and Grieg.
The program will culminate with Koyunbaba, by composer/guitarist Carlo Domeniconi. This is one of the most unique and exciting works in the classical guitar repertoire.
Peter Fletcher began guitar study at the age of seven under classical guitar instructor, John Sutherland. In December, 1983, he made his formal debut at the age of fifteen under the auspices of The Brasstown Concert Association in North Carolina. Wrote the critic of The Cherokee Scout, "He has technical facility but what one remembers about his playing is the nuances, the poetical phrasing, dynamic and tonal changes, his harmonics, his cadences."
Fletcher has studied extensively with world renowned classical guitarists such as Jose Tomas, David Leisner, David Russell, Oscar Ghiglia and Pepe Romero. He made his New York Debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in February 2007, and returned in March 2009.
Culver's Library Contest: April 11-16
The library will once again join the Wisconsin Library Association Foundation and Culver's Restaurants in the "Create Your Own Story" coloring campaign for children 11 and under. This is the 15th consecutive year local Culver's restaurants in Wisconsin have sponsored this event, encouraging children to read and celebrate their favorite book characters.
Children can enter the coloring event by picking up drawing sheets from the Racine Public Library's Youth Services Department or from the Mobile Library, or by downloading and printing a copy from the library's website at racinelibrary.info beginning April 11. Children are encouraged to draw characters from a book that they would like to meet at the library. Every child who completes a drawing will receive a "Be Our Guest" coupon for a free single scoop of frozen custard from Culver's and will be entered into a random drawing to win an additional prize of a free Team Scoopie Kids meal coupon and surprise gifts. Coloring sheet entries should be turned in to the Racine Public Library or Mobile Library by Friday, April 16. Final drawing will be announced Monday, April 18.

In September '05 Centaur Records released Peter Fletcher plays Erik Satie (CRC 2731). Steven Rings from The American Record Guide states: "The works all sit very nicely on the guitar, and Fletcher's performances are taut and incisive, counteracting the common tendency to play Satie's music like sleepy New Age."
Wrote Steven Rings of The American Record Guide: "He has a strong technique, a consistent tone, and a strong interpretive imagination."
Proclaimed Peter Burwasser of Fanfare Magazine: "Fletcher plays it all with a gracious virtuosity that makes for a very pleasing hour plus of unaffected musical poetry."

Library Feels the Economic Struggle
Clearly its no secret that the Racine community has been hit hard economically. In light of that, the Racine Public Library has become a host site for an Americorps VISTA member. This federally funded grant program places a Vista volunteer in deserving communities where economic projects will benefit the public.
The library's current VISTA has initiated a new Community Resource Center at the library. The center's purpose is to provide personalized assistance to patrons seeking jobs and/or needing help filling out online applications for social services and unemployment benefits. Access to information about community resources and agencies will also be available.
The Community Resource Center will be housed in the library's second floor computer lab on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4:30pm to 8pm; and all but the first Saturday of each month from 11am to 4pm. Assistance will be provided on a first come first served basis; no reservations are necessary. Please call Amber Richardson with questions regarding the center 262-636-9248.
The library will continue to offer free resume help on Wednesday's at the library from 9am to 5:30pm. Call 262-636-9217 to make an appointment with volunteer Juds Connell.

- Feb. 19; 2:00 pm - Birdscaping in the Midwest: Learn how to increase the number and variety of birds, butterflies, bees, and bats in your yard by growing native plants offering natural habitat and a year-long smorgasbord of berries, nuts, and seeds.
- Feb. 26 & Mar 26; 6-8pm - BONK! The free monthly performance series that quickly became an established entertainment event in downtown Racine may be about to end its run. Held at the Racine Arts Council 316 Sixth St., the series showcases poets, writers, musicians, film makers and other talented artists. Join us for what could be the final two performances by some outstanding talent, and perhaps be a hero to the rescue. Creative minds just might find a way to keep this gem going.
- May 5; 2:00pm - Lois on the Loose! One spirited woman takes a trip from Alaska to Argentina, then through the length of Africa, all from the seat of a motorcycle. Join us for an adventure-filled presentation by Lois Pryce, author of "Lois on the Loose - One Woman, One Motorcycle, 20,000 Miles Across the Americas".
- April 16; 2:30pm - Classical guitarist Peter Fletcher returns for a much anticipated second concert at the library. A versatile and in-demand artist, Mr. Fletcher plays standard works for classical guitar as well as music transcribed from other instruments. The New York City Classical Guitar Society's Nylon Review said simply: "Mr. Fletcher is one of the finest and most accomplished guitarists now appearing before the public."

His current release, Peter Fletcher Plays Baroque Music for Guitar, was released last October on the Tower Hill Records label. Mr. Fletcher's next recording project for Centaur involves an all-Grieg album, for which he himself is writing the guitar transcriptions. Scheduled release date is Fall '09.
