Get ready, get set... READ! It's Battle Time… time for local youth to form their teams for the 10th annual Battle of the Books competition at the Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St.
Battle of the Books is a literature contest for 4th and 5th grade students in Racine County where teams comprised of 4 students are asked to read and become knowledgeable about the content of 40 books selected by Racine Public Library librarians. Teams may be formed with students from the same or different schools. Teams with both 4th and 5th graders are accepted.
Meets are held in a public forum where team members are asked random questions about the books they read. Points are accumulated based on the number of correct answers. The team with the highest score among all participating teams is declared the champion.
A link to the 2009/2010 reading list, general information, and team registration form may be found at http://www.racinelibrary.info/YouthServicesBOB.htm. Registration for this year's Battle of the Books will only be accepted on-line. Registration closes December 21, 2009.

Saturdays, June 21 & 28: Community Journalism: Share Your Stories
We all have a story to share. It could be about a personal experience, a problem in your neighborhood or an issue that's important to your community. In today's media world, you can help people by writing and publishing these stories. The Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St., will once again host free community journalism classes facilitated by local journalist Dustin Block designed to empower community members to use local media and to spread important stories to the public.
On June 21 and June 28 from 2-4 p.m. the library will feature Be A Journalist!, a two-day class for people interested in the nuts and bolts of reporting news. You'll learn how to ask questions, take notes, investigate ideas and put everything together into a compelling news story. Participants should come ready to work! The first week we'll cover the basics, and everyone will leave with a story assignment to bring back to the class a week later. The second week we'll edit stories, fill in gaps and publish them online.
Although drop-in participants are welcome, registration is recommended for these free classes; call the Racine Public Library at 262.636.9217 to reserve a spot.

It's easier than you think! No experience is required. All you need to bring is an interest in your surroundings and a willingness to tell others what you see.
Block, former city editor of The Journal Times, is a veteran local journalist with 13 years of experience writing and editing news stories for various publications. He is now editor of the Insider News, founder of RacinePost.com and a freelance writer for publications including Milwaukee Magazine, Wisconsin Builder Magazine and ConsumerSearch.com.

RACINE READS
Racine Reads has announced the ninth community read selection as, "The Camel Bookmobile" by Masha Hamilton. Racine Reads is a community-wide reading project in which residents are encouraged to read the same book at the same time. The project seeks to promote reading and dialog among the people of Racine County.
Masha Hamilton's main character leaves a good job in the city to move to Africa and take books to a nomadic people. Instead of a bookmobile, the Camel Library Service in Kenya loads camels with books. The people must return all the books they borrowed before they are allowed to take out more books. It's a wonderful look at how literature enhances and impacts the lives of the Kenyan people.
The book was selected because of its emphasis on library outreach: taking library services into the community. In 2008, the Racine Public Library celebrates the 60th anniversary of its mobile library services.
The following Racine Reads events will take place in April and May:

Saturday, April 5 & April 19: Wii Gaming Days at the Library
The Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St., will host a series of Wii Gaming Days for ages 12 and older beginning Saturday, April 5 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the library's Lee Room. Although upcoming gaming days in May will feature tournament style play in specific Wii games, the April events are designed to allow players to get to know the Wii system and develop basic skills. On April 5, gaming will feature instructional play on Wii Sport, while April 19 will feature Wii Play. Library staff will be on hand to help players navigate the system and learn gaming techniques.
Registration is recommended for gaming days, as space is limited and playing time is available on a first-come/first-served basis. To reserve a spot, participants should call the library at 262.636.9245.
The purchase of the Wii Gaming equipment was made possible through a Library Services and Technology Act grant awarded to several Southeastern Wisconsin Library systems.

Monday, March 31: Economic Stimulus Package Information
The Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St., will host an informational session about the Economic Stimulus Package recently approved by the federal government on Monday, March 31 at 10:30 a.m. in the Library's Atrium meeting space. A representative of H & R Block will facilitate the program presenting information about why it's important to apply, who is eligible and how to go about receiving a tax rebate.
US President George W. Bush signed a two-year, 168-billion-dollar economic stimulus package in February in an effort to boost the ailing American economy. This action cleared the way for one time tax rebate checks to be mailed to tens of millions of Americans. The IRS will begin distributing these checks to eligible citizens in May.
Registration is recommended for this free program and may be made by calling the library at 262.636.9217.

Spring Reading with the Dogs
The Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St., is beginning its spring season of the popular Ruff Readers read-to-the-dogs program on Monday, March 31. The library has invited registered therapy dogs from Proper Paws University and the Racine Kennel Club to spend afternoons listening to kids read. Students in grades 1-5 may visit the Youth Services department on Mondays from 4-5:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 4-5 p.m., and Thursdays between 4:30-5:30 p.m. to enjoy a 15-minute private session reading to these gentle, non-judgmental listeners. Although registration is not required, it is recommended. Time slots will be available on a first come/first serve basis unless a child is pre-registered. Students who attend 3 or more reading sessions will have their picture taken with their favorite listening dog. These pictures will then be made into a keepsake "READ" postcard for the child to take with them and to have posted on a library display.
Studies have shown that children find reading to an animal less intimidating than reading to adults or peers. This unique event can transform a sometimes dreaded reading experience into a positive activity in which learning is facilitated. The Ruff Readers program is designed to encourage children to embrace the joy and fun of reading. Although our handlers and their dogs are wonderful listeners, they are not able to tutor children in reading skills. Children are encouraged to bring their favorite reading material or ask a librarian for a recommended selection.
For more information about the Ruff Readers program, please contact the library at 636-9245.
