Tuesday, September 27: Join us for the Racine Public Library's monthly After School Stories and Crafts

The Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh Street, invites children ages 4-10 and their families to a monthly After School Stories and Crafts program starting on Tuesday, September 27th, 3:30 - 4:30p.m. Participants will have fun with stories and enjoy creative craft activities. Registration is recommended. Contact the Youth Services Department to register for the program.

After School Math Club Taking New Registrations

The Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St., is offering students in grades 3 through 6 a chance to gather after school to share their love for math. The library's After School Math Club is held on Tuesday nights from 5:30-6:30 through May 31. Registration is recommended and may be done by calling the library at 262.636.9245 or by visiting the registration site online at www.racinelibrary.info.

The After School Math Club will be facilitated by Sandeep Reddy (7th Grade), a Hilpert Scholar from The Prairie School. Featuring math enrichment activities, new problem solving techniques and homework tutoring, the club provides an entertaining place for students to learn and share with their fellow math lovers.

Reddy was a regional finalist invited to participate in the 2009 NSF Math Bee Nationals in Maryland. He has many math accomplishments, including a first place finish and invitation to the state competition in the 2011 regional Math Counts team event.

Reddy has presented two math workshops at the Racine Public Library, "Learning Math the Fun Way" and "Creative Math for Grades Four Through Six." He was also the facilitator of the 2010 After School Math Club last year at the Racine Public Library.

After School Reading Fun

The Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St., offers several opportunities for school age children to enjoy after school activities involving reading.

An After-School Storytime with stories and crafts geared to kids ages 3-10 is held once a month. The next event will be held on Tuesday, March 29 from 3:30-4:30 pm. Registration is requested and may be done by calling the library at 262.636.9245 or by visiting the library's website at www.racinelibrary.info.

School age children in grades 1-5 are also invited to spend 15 min. reading to one of the library's specially-trained listening dogs in the Ruff Readers Program. These canine friends visit the library after school several days a week. This is a fun way for kids to practice reading to a non-judgmental and gentle listener. Time slots available on a first-come/first-served basis. This season's Ruff Readers program is underway. Call the library at 262.636.9245 for days and times, or to reserve a reading spot.

Storytelling and More at the Racine Public Library

AFTER SCHOOL STORYTIME is being offered for kids ages 4-10 on Tuesday, Oct 26 from 3:30-4:30pm. Storyteller Keiko Skow shares her favorite stories and her imaginative craft ideas and activities with those in attendance. All children must be accompanied by a parent. Registration is requested.

THE BEST PRESENTS AREN’T THINGS
Most people don’t need any more “stuff” in any category. So how do you give a gift that’s meaningful, personal, and memorable? No matter what your budget, you’ll get lots of ideas for unique, practical, and earth-friendly gifts for all ages at this program being held on Tuesday, Oct 26 at 6:30pm. Clutter Coach Kathi Miller will give us great ideas for gift-giving that will truly be appreciated. Registration is required.

FAMILY FUN NIGHTS are special activity nights for families looking for some quality time together. Held once a month on Thursday evenings at 6:30pm, they feature stories, crafts, activities and special guests. This month's family night, being held on Thursday, October 28, will feature a special visit by storyteller Auntie LuLu, mask making, and a pumpkin craft. Wearing of costumes is encouraged! The program is appropriate for kids ages 4-10 and their families. Younger siblings are welcome.

TIME SLIPS
Join the Racine Public Library as they host the Racine Art Museum's SPARK! Cultural Programming for People with Memory Loss on Monday, Nov 1 from 1:30-3:00pm and on Thursday, Nov. 11 from 10:30am -12:00pm. The library will present "Time Slips", a creative storytelling method that opens storytelling to everyone by replacing the pressure to remember with encouragement to imagine. "Time Slips” inspires people with memory loss to share the gifts of their imaginations. Together participants will create a group storytelling adventure.

Racine Public Library Programs for All Ages

The Racine Public Library continues its fall programming with these great educational and entertaining opportunities for all ages. All programs are free and open to the public. Some registration is required and may be done by visiting the library at 75 Seventh St, calling the library at 262.636.9245, or by visiting the library's website at racinelibrary.info.

1. YOUTH BOOK DISCUSSION GROUPS are available for students in grades 3, 5 and 6. Book Br@ts for 3rd graders meets on the third Monday of each month at 6pm. BookCh@ts for grades 5 and 6 meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 4pm. Both groups introduce readers to exciting works of juvenile fiction and offer them the opportunity to explore the stories in depth with others. Sponsorship is provided by the Friends of the Library. Participation is free and members are able to keep their own copies of the books read. Registration is required.

2. AFTER SCHOOL INSTRUCTIONAL CHESS is being held on Thursdays from 4:30 6:30pm through October 28. These weekly gatherings are open to ages 5 and older, and beginners are welcome. A volunteer chess instructor will be available to assist beginners. A recreational tournament for all participants will take place on October 21 and 28. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited and registration is required.

3. TODDLER AND PRESCHOOL STORYTIMES begin October 5 and will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10am in the Youth Services Dept. Two different age appropriate programs are held simultaneously to accommodate different learning levels. Both programs are designed to teach crucial early literacy skills. Children ages 1-3 are invited to sit with their parents in a 20 minute storytime featuring songs, fingerplay, and short stories. Children ages 4-5 who are able to sit independently are invited to attend a longer preschool storytime offering more complex stories and activities. These are drop-in events and no registration is needed to attend.

4. AFTER SCHOOL STORYTIME is being offered for kids ages 4-10 on Tuesday, September 28 from 3:30-4:30pm. Storyteller Keiko Skow shares her favorite stories and her imaginative craft ideas and activities with those in attendance. All children must be accompanied by a parent. Registration is requested.

5. RUFF READERS is the library's award-winning read-to-the-dogs program for kids ages 6-12. Youth are invited to spend 15 minutes reading to one of our therapy-trained listening dogs. This is a relaxed and fun way for kids to practice reading. Registration for this program is strongly suggested. The following schedule begins September 20:

Mondays 4:00-5:00pm
Tuesdays 4:30-5:30 pm and 6:00-7:00pm
Wednesdays 3:30-4:30pm
Thursdays 4:30-5:30pm and 5:30-6:30pm

6. BONK! The Racine Public Library invites you to enjoy an evening with some very talented artists during this free monthly performance series held at the Racine Arts Council, 316 6th St, in downtown Racine. The series was created to expose the public to both local and nationally-recognized artistic talents. Each event showcases poets, writers, musicians, film makers and other talented artists. This month's event is being held on Saturday, September 25 from 6-8pm. Doors open at 5:30pm. with seating available on a first come/first served basis. The library's featured performers will be poet/writer Kathleen Rooney, poet Nate Slawson, and the dance troupe from Laurenzi Dance Studios. No registration is necessary.

Kathleen Rooney is a founding editor of Rose Metal Press and the author, most recently, of the memoir Live Nude Girl: My Life as an Object (University of Arkansas Press, 2009) and the essay collection For You, For You I Am Trilling These Songs (Counterpoint, 2010). With Elisa Gabbert, she is the co-author of the poetry collection That Tiny Insane Voluptuousness (Otoliths, 2008) and the chapbooks Don't ever stay the same; keep changing (Spooky Girlfriend Press, 2009) and Something Really Wonderful (dancing girl press, 2007). Her first solo poetry collection, Oneiromance (an epithalamion) won the 2007 Gatewood Prize from the feminist publisher Switchback Books. She lives in Chicago.

Nate Slawson designs books for Cinematheque Press. He is the author of two chapbooks, most recently The Tiny Jukebox (H_NGM_N Books, 2009). His work has appeared or is forthcoming in Slope, Handsome, Cannibal, Corduroy Mtn., Forklift, Ohio, Typo, and other places.

7. BANNED BOOKS WEEK - "Think for Yourself...and Let Others Do the Same" - September 27-October 2 marks the library's annual Banned Books Week celebration. Banned Books Week is the only national celebration of the freedom to read. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than a thousand books have been challenged since 1982. The challenges have occurred in every state and in hundreds of communities. Targets range from books that explore contemporary issues and controversies to classic and beloved works of American literature. Check out the library's website for a list of banned books or visit our banned books displays at the main library, 75 Seventh St. Be adventurous; read a banned book and think for yourself.

September Programs at the Library

The Racine Public Library has scheduled several cultural and educational programs for adults and youth this fall. All programs are free and open to the public. Some registration is required and may be done by visiting the Library at 75 Seventh St, calling the library at 262.636.9245 or by visiting the library's website at racinelibrary.info.

COMMUNITY RECREATIONAL CHESS nights are being held on Thursdays from 4:30-6:30pm beginning September 16 and continuing through October 28. These weekly gatherings are open to ages 5 and older, and beginners are welcome. A volunteer chess instructor will be available to assist beginners on Thursdays, September 16, 30 and October 14. A recreational tournament for all participants will take place on October 21 and 28. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited and registration is required.

STRONG VOICES: CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS are open to young, passionate writers ages 13-18. The monthly Saturday afternoon gatherings will focus on the finer details of writing within different genres and formats. The group will not only explore their own written voices, but those of other well-known authors, as well. Writers will have the opportunity to submit their work to a variety of scholarship contests. There is no cost for the workshops and all supplies will be provided. Interested writers should contact the library at 262.636.9245 for more information or to reserve a spot for the upcoming programs. Registration may also be done via the library's website at www.racinelibrary.info. Workshops will be held on Saturdays, September 18, October 16 and November 20 from 1:00-4:00pm. Participants may choose to attend any or all of the workshops at their convenience.

Family Storytime Opportunities at the Library

Families are invited to participate in a variety of free and entertaining storytime events hosted by the Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St. All programs are free and open to the public; no registration is necessary. You'll find the library's enthusiastic storytellers on the road the last Saturday of each month as they perform a Saturday morning event for kids ages 3-10 and their families. On Saturday, April 24 at 9:30 am , a storyteller will be present at Cup of Hope, 507 Sixth St., to entertain with an hour of stories and a simple craft. Enjoy a leisurely morning of quality family time and a cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.

The library is also offering an After-School Storytime with stories and crafts geared to kids ages 3-10. The next event in this series will be held on Tuesday, April 27 from 3:30-4:30 pm. Storyteller Keiko Skow shares her favorite stories and her imaginative craft ideas with those in attendance.

The next event will be held on Thursday, April 29 from 6:00-7:30 pm with a special presentation celebrating Dia De Los Niños/Dia De Los Libros or Childrens Day/Book Day. A fun filled storytelling performance by Bilingual Storyteller Kay Weeden, entitled ¡Say Olé!, will feature stories, rhythms and dance in English and Spanish for both English and Spanish speakers. The event is free and no registration is necessary. Younger siblings are welcome to attend this wonderful event.

The library's popular preschool storytimes, held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m., continue through March 10. Children from birth to age 5 may attend these 30 min. events. The programs feature fingerplays, stories, music and more designed to develop age-appropriate early literacy skills. Children who are able to sit independently in storytime may attend the Preschool program. Children who prefer to be accompanied by an adult may attend the Infant & Toddler program. Both programs are held simultaneously at 10 a.m.

New to the library's preschool storytime schedule is the addition of Educational Open Play days. Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:30-12:30 and Fridays from 11 am-1 pm, the library will turn its storytelling room into an educational exploration area with a wide variety of educational toys and learning aids available. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Play days are held during the storytime season only.

Dressed in period costume and toting her "sack of surprises" Lynn recounts the stories and history of this beloved author of the "Little House" books.

Library Now Offers After-School Math Club

The Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St., is offering students in grades 1-6 a chance to gather after school on Tuesday nights to share their love of math. Beginning January 19 and continuing through May 25, Tuesday nights from 5:30-6:30pm will be devoted to the After School Math Club. Facilitated by Prairie school student, Sandeep Reddy, the club will provide a place for students to receive help on homework problems, learn new techniques in problem solving, get to know fun math websites, enjoy fun math activities, and share and learn from fellow math lovers.

Sandeep Reddy was regional finalist invited to participate in the 2009 NSF Math Bee Nationals in Maryland. He has achieved many math awards and accomplishments, including successfully completing every problem in an 800 page text book. Sandeep has presented two math workshops at the Racine Public Library entitled, "Learning Math the Fun Way," and "Creative Math for Grades 4-6."

Storytime and Reading Opportunities at the Library

The Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St., is offering a winter reading challenge and several exciting storytime programs for kids of all ages beginning in January.

For kids in grades 3-10, the library is offering the Milwaukee Bucks Library Reading Program. Participants have until Feb. 13, 2009 to complete a 500 page reading goal. Readers score points for each page read from a book, magazine, or newspaper. All participants will receive a Milwaukee Bucks poster, stickers and bookmark when a reading record is turned in. 500 points scored earns each participant a voucher for a free ticket to one of two select Milwaukee Bucks Basketball games. Students who read more than 750 pages will have their names entered into a drawing for an official Milwaukee Bucks autographed basketball. Six randomly selected children will participate in the Milwaukee Bucks starting lineup for each game date and 10 randomly selected children will be recognized at halftime for each game date. Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:30-12:30 and Fridays from 11 am-1 pm, the library will turn its storytelling room into an educational exploration area with a wide variety of educational toys and learning aids available. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Play days are held during the storytime season only.

The library is also offering an After-School Storytime with stories and crafts geared to kids ages 3-10. The next event in this series will be held on Tuesday, January 26 from 3:30-4:30 pm. Monthly after-school storytimes will be held on the 4th Tuesdays.

School age children in grades 1-5 are invited to spend 15 min. reading to one of the library's specially-trained listening dogs in the Ruff Readers Program. These canine friends visit the library after school several days a week. This is a fun way for kids to practice reading to a non-judgmental and gentle listener. Time slots available on a first-come/first-served basis. This season's Ruff Readers program will begin on Monday, Jan. 18, 2009. Kids ages 3-10 and their families are also invited to attend Family Fun Nights once a month. These hour-long events explore a variety of topics through stories, games, activities and crafts. The next event, We Have a Dream, will be held on Thursday, Jan. 14 from 6:30-7:30 pm. Join the storytellers as they celebrate the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other significant figures in Black History.

All storytime events are free and open to the public. No registration is necessary unless otherwise indicated.

Library Offers Fun Family Events

Families looking for quality time together are encouraged to check out the Racine Public Library's fall line-up of programs and events. Storytimes, activity nights and game days are being offered throughout the upcoming months.

Families of children ages 5-10 are invited to attend monthly Family Fun Nights to enjoy stories, and other activities together. On Thursday, September 24 from 6:30-7:30 pm, the library will host an evening of math exploration. Prairie school student Sandeep Reddy will be on hand to share fun math activities and excellent websites with interested kids. 11 Year old Sandeep recently participated as a 2009 Finalist in the NSF National Math Bee. Sandeep has achieved many math awards and accomplishments ...including successfully completing EVERY problem in an 800 page text book! Parents are invited to attend a discussion with Sandeep's parents and other educators on raising strong math literate children. The library's extensive resources on math activities and math literacy curriculum will be on display for checkout. The program is free and no registration is necessary. Family Fun Nights will also be held on Thursday, Oct. 29 (Pumpkin Palooza!); Tuesday, Nov. 24 (Celebrating Families); and Tuesday, Dec. 22 (Bedtime Stories).

On Saturday, Sept. 26 from 11:00 am-1:00 pm, Belle City Games will host a family game day. Families are invited to visit at their convenience to play a variety of board games for all ages. Belle City games is an online game store aimed at educating children and bringing families closer together. They provide games for all ages. This program is free and no registration is necessary. Games are available on a first come first served basis.

Looking for a fun after-school activity for your school-age child? The library will also offer monthly after-school storytimes for kids ages 4 and older. On Tuesday, Sept. 29 from 3:30-4:30 kids are invited to sit in on a short storytime and then stay to make their own unique and colorful wind-sock. Additional after-school storytime activities will be held on Tuesdays, Oct. 27 and Nov. 17.
