The Racine Public Library, 75 Seventh St., is hosting winter reading challenges for kids from Pre-kindergarten through 10th grade. The reading programs will run until February 23. Reading logs and instructions may be obtained by visiting the Youth Services Dept. at the Main library or the Mobile Library.
For kids in grades 3-10, the library is offering the Milwaukee Bucks Library Reading Program. Participants have until Feb. 23, 2009 to complete a 500 page reading goal. Readers score points for each page read from a book, magazine, or newspaper. All participants will receive a Milwaukee Buck's poster, stickers and bookmark when a reading record is turned in. 500 points scored earns each participant a voucher for a free ticket to select Milwaukee Bucks Basketball games. Students who read more than 750 pages will have their names entered into a drawing for an official Milwaukee Bucks autographed basketball. Six randomly selected children will participate in the Milwaukee Bucks starting lineup for each game date and 10 randomly selected children will be recognized at halftime for each game date. The free ticket voucher is only valid when the participant is accompanied by an adult.
For children in Pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade, the library offers "Read for the Fun of It." Children may read any book they choose or have a family member read to them. The titles of the books and the number of pages read are then recorded on the Reading Log. Once a child has read 500 or more pages, the Log is turned in to a librarian and the child will receive a small gift.
Children of all ages are also invited to read to earn a free ticket voucher to Disney On Ice 100 Years of Magic. Reading forms will be available at the Youth Services Reference Desk until January 31, 2009. Vouchers are available while supplies last.
