The next event in the Racine Public Library's new "BONK!" performance series will take place on Saturday, Feb. 28 beginning at 6 p.m. This month's BONK! will feature performances from storyteller and visual artist Tom Clark, writer Katie O'Shaugnessy, poet Ryan Philip Kulefsky, and musician Luis Garza.
Created to expose the public to both local and nationally recognized artistic talents, the series showcases poets, writers, musicians, film makers and all sorts of talents in between. A completely free program, this series is located in downtown Racine at the Blueberries restaurant, 418 Sixth Street, which offers food and drink to be purchased at the events. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with seating available on a first come/first served basis. Each BONK! event features a short question and answer session with the artists.
Tom Clark is a kindergarten teacher, artist and storyteller who manages to interweave each of his personas into the artwork he produces. He is currently exploring his art through the use of picassiette (broken china mosaic) and hand-made paper. His work has been described as "spontaneous, touchable, and childlike."
Katie O'Shaughnessy, is a recent graduate from Carthage College now living in Illinois. She is currently working as a tutor for Elgin Community College and as a health food specialist for the Crystal Lake Health Food Store. She hopes to soon be attending graduate school. Katie's short story "Dust" won the 2008 Chapin-Tague Award for Fiction.
Ryan Philip Kulefsky was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He teaches American literature and Writing and Rhetoric at Columbia College Chicago.
Singer/songwriter Luis Garza's music was heard recently at the Racine Public Library's Latin@ Voices Hispanic Heritage Performance Series in September 2008. His soulful blend of guitar and voice was a popular addition to the event, as we are sure it will be for BONK!
Local artists and performers are encouraged to consider sharing their talent/craft with the community via the BONK! series.
