The Battle of the Books is a literature contest for fourth and fifth grade students from the Racine area. 118 teams participated in the Battle of the Books over a three-week period. Teams were composed of up to four students, with over 450 students participating. In preparing for the tournament, the participants were asked to read and become knowledgeable about the content of 36 titles selected for the Battle by youth services librarians. In a public forum, team members were asked random questions about the books they read, and accumulated points based on the number of right answers. The teams with the highest score among all participating teams were declared the champions. Teams with the top five scores earned a place in the "Winners' Circle."
Seven other teams scored high enough to merit an Honorable Mention: the Schulte Hall of Famers: Austin Shilhavy, Adam Windle, Jason Adams, Alazea Tamez; the Gifford Lightning Girls: Lauren Willing, Emma Bryant, Sophie Young; the John Paul II Academy Rapid Readers: Anne Howard, Casey Watros, Leah Topp, Jared Sandkuhler; the Jefferson Lighthouse Readers of the Round Table: Jonah Peterson, Ethan Wilkins, Henry Panthofer, Hunter Cochran; the St. John's Lutheran Hardy Boys: Elliott Hansing, Griffin Radtke, Cyrus Latza; the Racine Montessori RMS Bleeding Hearts: Sanaa Hill, Solomyn Collen, Elizabeth Haergl; and the St. Rita's World Book Fighters: Anna Mae Dixon, Alexis Monosa, Amber Schuls, Alexis Franko.
