Racine Public Library Foundation’s Emily Lee Awards to be Presented May 16, 2013

The Racine Public Library Foundation's Emily Lee Awards will be presented at a dinner on May 16, 2013, 5:30 p.m. at the DeKoven Center, 600 21st St., Racine. Tickets are $50 each, tables of eight are also available, and may be purchased through the foundation's website, www.rplfd.org .

Honorees include Mary Janaky, recipient of the Distinguished Librarian Award given each year to a librarian whose work has contributed significantly to the development and growth of library services in Racine. Janaky is being recognized for her efforts in identifying and preserving materials published by the Western Publishing Co.

Fisk Johnson, chairman and CEO of SC Johnson, will receive the Friend of the Library Award for his work in sponsoring Racine Reads: Dream Big! The program successfully inspired 10,000 Racine elementary students to read one million books during the 2011/2012 school year.

Racine native Denis Kitchen, underground cartoonist, publisher and author, will be honored with the Emily Lee Award for his pioneering comics and graphic novels. Kitchen is co-author of a new biography, "Al Capp: A Life to the Contrary," about the creator of the Li'l Abner comic strip.

Guest speaker for the evening is humorist and author Julia Pandl. Her first book, "Memoir of the Sunday Brunch," recalls her childhood working alongside her father at the popular George Pandl's restaurant in Bayside, Wis.

About Emily A. Lee

Emily A. Lee, widow of the public library's first board president Charles H. Lee, died in 1927. She
bequeathed $100,000 to the Racine Public Library in her last will and testament, stipulating that the gift not be used for operating expenses, but as a permanent endowment, the income to be used for the purchase of books and equipment. In her honor, the Emily Lee Award is given to persons with Racine connections who have distinguished themselves in the world of literature.
