The FUN Side of Reading

No one listens better than a beloved pet and the library has found some of the best listeners around. Returning to the library from Feb. 4 to March 13 is the Ruff Readers read-to-the-dogs program for kids in grades 1-5. Students are invited to spend 15-minutes reading to specially-trained "listening" dogs from the Racine Kennel Club and Proper Paws University. The dogs will be available for reading sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-5 p.m. and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Time slots are available on a first come/first serve basis and may be reserved ahead of time by calling the library at 262.636.9245.

The Racine Public Library will also continue its Adventures in Stories monthly storytelling program for families with children ages 5-10. Combining storytelling (sometimes with a bilingual twist), crafts, and other fun activities kids will explore a different theme for every event. All programs require registration by calling 262.636.9245.

The season's first program on Monday, Jan. 21 from 6-7:30 p.m. will feature a Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday celebration with the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Wisconsin. Children will be experience stories and songs about this famous peacekeeper's life and adventures. A special group craft and snacks will round out the evening.

The program on Tuesday, Feb. 19 will run from 6:30-8 p.m. and will feature Caldecott award-winning stories and bookmaking. Parents are invited to attend a Bookmaking Workshop with educator Bev Schumacher while their child attends their own program. Parents will learn simple book-making styles and techniques to share with their children at home. Children will hear great stories, create their own take-home book, play games and enjoy a snack.

On March 18 from 6:30-7:30 p.m., participants will explore the many spring events celebrated around the world through stories, songs and crafts. Children won't want to miss the very special guest invited for this evening.
